Libertarian Futurist Society

The Libertarian Futurist Society, a nonprofit international network of freedom-loving sf/fantasy fans, was founded in 1982 to recognize and promote libertarian-themed science fiction, fantasy and other fantastic fiction. The LFS presents the annual Prometheus Award for Best Novel, the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award for Best Classic Fiction and occasional Special Prometheus Awards for lifetime achievement, short fiction, anthologies, graphic novels and other categories.

The LFS publishes the public Prometheus blog with reviews, essays, award news, author updates and appreciations of past winners and also sends to LFS members the LFS News, a quarterly email newsletter with updates on awards, nominees and finalists, voting deadlines, awards ceremony plans, judging committee and board openings for volunteers, and other special membership opportunities. (From 1982 to 2015, the LFS published the quarterly journal Prometheus, available on-line via an index of all volumes linking to particular articles and entire issues.)

How to join the Libertarian Futurist Society

If you enjoy science fiction, fantasy and speculative near-future works that dramatize the value of freedom and the dangers of tyranny from the extremes of Left and Right, and are excited by the possibilities for peace, prosperity, progress, justice and respect for other people’s rights that a free society unleashes, then we invite you to become a part of the LFS. If you are intrigued by libertarianism and futurism, and the cross-pollination between these two dynamic fields, consider joining this decentralized coalition of free spirits working to inspire a free-er future.

Membership levels and benefits

All LFS members may nominate works for all categories of the Prometheus Award and receive the members-only quarterly email newsletter, LFS News. Basic members have the right to vote for the Hall of Fame for Best Classic Fiction and occasional Special Awards. Full members, Sponsors and all three levels of Benefactors have the right to vote for the Hall of Fame and Special Awards as well as Best Novel. That top prize comes with a one-ounce gold coin, whose additional expense is covered by these higher membership levels.
Basic $40/year
Full $80/year
Sponsor $150/year
Benefactor $300/year
Silver Benefactor $500/year
Gold Benefactor $1000/year

To uphold the high standards of the Prometheus Awards, Full Members, Sponsors, and Benefactors who wish to exercise their right to vote in the annual Prometheus Awards are encouraged to read all the finalists in a category before casting their votes in that category. Please consider becoming an LFS Sponsor Benefactor, Silver Benefactor or Gold Benefactor, whether you plan to vote in the awards or simply wish to help sustain the LFS and our awards program at a high level of financial support.

Unless they prefer to remain anonymous, Silver and Gold Benefactors also will receive recognition annually on the Prometheus Blog, while Gold Benefactors also will be thanked publicly during the annual Prometheus Awards ceremony.
