It was written after his first novel <em>Rocket Ship Galileo\u00a0<\/em>around 1947, \u00a0but was not published until the collection <em>The Worlds of Robert A. Pulling your own weight and fighting is what gives you the franchise in this company.<\/p>\n<p>The company must deal with a member, Joe, who isn\u2019t strong enough to stay hidden away; it\u2019s hinted twice he\u2019s not pulling his weight, and he proves it by leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the story tells of the consequences that ensue from Joe\u2019s defection, making sure the company as a whole stays safe until the day that they can link up with the Provisional Government and have \u201cunity\u2026from coast to coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The key to the entire story is in just a couple of lines:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one thing this has taught me: You can\u2019t enslave a free man. Only person can do that to a man is himself.\u00a0 No sir\u2014 you can\u2019t enslave a free man. The most you can do is kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And a little later:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t you worry about [him]. Heinlein: A Reader\u2019s Companion <\/em>he notes that this story may have been completed from undeveloped story notes for \u201cThe Stone Pillow,\u201d one of the \u2018Future History\u2019 stories that appeared as a title in Heinlein\u2019s famous timeline published with several revised versions.<\/p>\n<p>While not exactly the plot noted in Heinlein\u2019s archives, the timing and circumstances of \u201cThe Stone Pillow\u201d could also fit \u201cFree Men.\u201d The 1950 version of the timeline indicates that the timeframe for \u2018The Stone Pillow\u2019 was the year 2025.<\/p>\n<figure interesting predictions in his lifetime but he wasn\u2019t right about everything!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not surprising to me that the LFS would choose to honor a story that very clearly restates some very core libertarian ideals as a key part of its plot.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that Mr. Heinlein would have been incredibly pleased that its message is still being honored some 76 years after he wrote
