The freer the society\u2026 the less they care if you leave. Societies which face regular periods of extreme hardship \u2013 heavy snow or even regular dry periods, have to prepare for these or they die. It becomes an ingrained part of the society or maybe even the genome.<\/p>\n<p>Crowded, dense living condition shape very different societies to wide open ones.\u00a0 It is harder &#8211; not impossible, but harder &#8211; for liberty to thrive under high-density conditions \u2013 which of course is why the authoritarians always push for those. He is going to get an education that people are people &#8211; not defined by superficialities.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, I worked on something I have been blindsided by, myself: each side expects the other to think and act like themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Our hero is something of a na\u00efve drongo, but a nasty thought would never enter his head without a battering ram. Those he is dealing with in the Big Syd never had any other kind of thoughts. I created a comedy of errors \u2013 and a learning curve.<\/p>\n<p>The characters finally do escape this hell-hole \u00a0\u2013 as our hero and his sidekick have their first taste of real slavery \u2013 before escaping this and setting out to really uplift the world through engineering and\u2026 commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Our Candide-hero finds people whose mindset is not alien to his, and with his Big Syd sidekick (whose growth is as marked as his\u00a0 \u2013 just in a different direction). There is a lot of truth in the mongrel simile, because I took a great deal from authors I revere &#8211; authors, oddly, who are very well represented in the Prometheus.<\/p>\n<p>It got churned up with a mis-spent youth \u2013 there was never anyone who took <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/lunar-revolution-rational-anarchism-anarcho-capitalism-a-self-aware-computer-ecological-crisis-and-tanstaafl-an-appreciation-of-robert-heinleins-the-moon-is-a-harsh-mistress-a-1983-prom\/\">Heinlein\u2019s<\/a> \u2018Specialization is for ants\u2019 more to heart. I bloody well will.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s knocked me down a few times, but nothing earns more respect in traditional Australian culture than the battler who gets knocked down and gets up and tries again and again.
