Tolkien\u2019s classic Prometheus-winning trilogy, you should find economist Bryan Caplan\u2019s recent blog post illuminating &#8211; as well as Ilya Somin&#8217;s <em>Reason<\/em> posting about it.<\/p>\n<p>An economics professor at George Mason University and a New York Times bestselling author, Caplan finds many parallels \u2013 and similar flaws &#8211; between such fan criticisms of Tolkien\u2019s classic fantasy trilogy and socialist criticisms of free markets.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Reason magazine, which published constitutional lawyer <a href=\"http:\/\/Capitalism, Socialism, and Fan Complaints About the Role of Giant Eagles in &quot;The Lord of the Rings&quot;\">Ilya Somin\u2019s column<\/a> highlighting <a href=\"https:\/\/betonit.substack.com\/p\/the-market-and-the-eagles\">Caplan\u2019s intriguing arguments<\/a> (and some of his own) on Reason&#8217;s Volokh Conspiracy legal blog.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Both Somin and Caplan are clearly devout Tolkien fans, well-versed in the intricacies and plausible world-building in his Middle Earth. Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/volokh-conspiracy\/wp\/2017\/11\/07\/lessons-from-a-century-of-communism\/\">real-world\u00a0<\/a>socialism looks a lot like Mordor under the rule of Sauron. Ditto for real-world fascism and <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/volokh\/2022\/12\/23\/a-compelling-outline-of-the-case-against-nationalism\/\">statist nationalism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>FRESH TAKES ON TOLKIEN<br \/>\n<\/strong>LFS leader William H. They&#8217;re giant eagles. Top of the food chain. They could easily just roost safely in their eyries and live out their lives in peace. Yet without asking for the slightest compensation, these heroic birds\u2026<br \/>\n\u2026saved Gandalf at Isengard,<br \/>\n\u2026fought the Nazgul at the Black Gate,<br \/>\n\u2026rescued the Dwarves from the trees when they were surrounded by Goblins and Wargs,<br \/>\n\u2026 and delivered the coup de grace at the Battle of the Five Armies.<\/p>\n<p>The eagles aren&#8217;t perfect, but they <em>are <\/em>awesome.
