suffering several strokes during heart surgery, was widely acclaimed for his wide-ranging and epic science fiction and fantasy.<\/p>\n<p>An international bestseller and Heinlein Award-winner, Bear wrote more than 50 novels and almost as many works of short fiction, and edited an important Poul Anderson anthology.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Bear never won a Prometheus Award, much of his life and work were \u201cPrometheus-adjacent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Among Bear&#8217;s best-known novels: <em>Moving Mars\u00a0<\/em>(a Nebula Award winner), <em>Darwin\u2019s Radio\u00a0<\/em>(a Nebula Award winner), <em>Blood Music<\/em> (a Hugo and Nebula award finalist), <em>Eon <\/em>and its sequels\u00a0<em>Eternity <\/em>and<em> Legacy,\u00a0<\/em><em>The Forge of God\u00a0<\/em>(a Hugo and Nebula nominee) and its sequel <em>Anvil of Stars<\/em>, <em>Queen of Angels\u00a0<\/em>(a Hugo finalist) and its followup <em>\/Slant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a <em>Queen of Angels<\/em> universe, charts the historical development of self-awareness and artificial intelligence, according to Wikipedia, while its continuing character Jill was inspired in part by Robert Heinlein\u2019s self-aware computer in\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/lunar-revolution-rational-anarchism-anarcho-capitalism-a-self-aware-computer-ecological-crisis-and-tanstaafl-an-appreciation-of-robert-heinleins-the-moon-is-a-harsh-mistress-a-1983-prom\/\">The Moon is a Harsh Mistress<\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>one of the first two works inducted into the Prometheus Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<div><a son-in-law of multiple Prometheus winner Poul Anderson, and Gardner Dozois co-edited the Poul Anderson 2014 anthology <em>Multiverse: Exploring Poul Anderson\u2019s Worlds<\/em>, which included an Anderson-universe story by Bear and stories and essays by other writers.<\/p>\n<p>Although Bear\u2019s fiction never was nominated for a Prometheus (primarily because few if any of his terrific novels fit the award&#8217;s distinctive focus), many libertarian and freedom-loving sf readers were fans of Bear.<\/p>\n<p><a (throughout his Future History series), Prometheus winner Larry Niven (most notably, his <em>Ringworld\u00a0<\/em>sagas) and Isaac Asimov (whose <em>Foundation\u00a0<\/em>novels inspired Bear\u2019s sequel <em>Foundation and Chaos<\/em>, part of the multi-volume continuation of Asimov\u2019s classic (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/an-appreciation-of-donald-kingsburys-psychohistorical-crisis-the-2002-prometheus-best-novel-winner\/\">if initially statist in its central-planning scenario)<\/a> series with co-authors David Brin, a multiple Prometheus nominee, and hard-sf-author Gregory Benford, a libertarian and <em>Reason<\/em>\u00a0magazine contributing editor for many years).<\/p>\n<p><a
