novels and stories that often incorporate science fiction should celebrate the memory of one of the most influential and popular American writers and novelists of the 20<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>century.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Libertarians remember and honor Vonnegut, too \u2013 and not just because \u201cHarrison Bergeron,\u201d Vonnegut\u2019s satirical cautionary fable about the authoritarian excesses inherent in radical egalitarianism, has been recognized by the Libertarian Futurist Society with its 2019 induction into our Prometheus Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/0-Vonnegut-Complete-Stories200_.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" was born Nov. 11, 1922 in Indianapolis and died in 2007, is widely noted for his satirical, skeptical and anti-authoritarian novels about life, death, war, liberty and individuality.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote about the alien Tralfamadorians and\/or their planet Tralfamadore in five of his sf novels, first in <em>The Sirens of Titan\u00a0<\/em>(1959), then in <em>God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater\u00a0<\/em>(1965) and much later in <em>Hocus Pocus\u00a0<\/em>(1990) and <em>Timequake\u00a0<\/em>(1997).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But most notably the aliens appear in <em>Slaughterhouse Five,\u00a0<\/em><em>or, The Children\u2019s Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death,\u00a0<\/em>Vonnegut\u2019s best-selling semi-autobiographical novel.<\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This anti-war sf classic, published in 1969 and adapted into a 1972 film, follows the life of Billy Pilgrim from childhood through World War II and his later life in America \u2013 but in a non-linear way, since Billy is unstuck in time and has no idea of where and when he may be going next.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by Vonnegut\u2019s own WWII experiences as a prisoner of war, the novel most poignantly focuses on Billy\u2019s capture by the German army and his survival of the Allied firebombing of Dresden as a prisoner of war while imprisoned underground with other soldiers in LFS members and libertarian futurists, as well as sf fans.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a Blog appreciation<\/strong><\/a> of Vonnegut\u2019s cautionary fable \u201cHarrison Bergeron\u201d observes:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVonnegut was serious through his humor, as all the best satirists are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarrison Bergeron\u201d exposes and mourns the chilling consequences of radical egalitarianism taken to inhuman, Orwellian and Kafkaesque extremes that denies individuality, diversity and the opportunity to excel.<\/p>\n<p>In satirically challenging such dangerous, cruel and inhumane trends and by dramatizing a dystopia in which the natural diversity of people\u2019s
