Paul Wilson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to the members of the Libertarian Futurist Society for this honor.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be brief.\u00a0 (\u201cLipidleggin\u2019\u201d\u00a0<em>is\u00a0<\/em>a short story, after all.)<\/p>\n<p>Back in the 1970s, a national health care system was a major political topic.\u00a0 (Some things never change, do they?)\u00a0 So I asked the next question: If the State is paying for your health care, won\u2019t the State demand a say in behaviors that it considers hazardous to your health?\u00a0 Like, oh, say, banning saturated fats?<\/p>\n<p>So, with tongue planted firmly in cheek, I wrote this little cautionary tale about a day when foods with saturated fats \u2013 such as butter and eggs \u2013 would be banned by the government.\u00a0 I mean, I saw how it\u00a0<em>could<\/em>\u00a0happen, but never for a moment did I believe it\u00a0<em>would<\/em>\u00a0happen.\u00a0 Not in a free country like our good old U.S. of A.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>George Scithers bought the story and published it in the May-June 1978 issue of <em>Asimov\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>SF magazine.\u00a0 (Remember that date.)
