Paul Wilson<\/strong><\/p>\n Many thanks to the members of the Libertarian Futurist Society for this honor.<\/p>\n I\u2019ll be brief.\u00a0 (\u201cLipidleggin\u2019\u201d\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>a short story, after all.)<\/p>\n Back in the 1970s, a national health care system was a major political topic.\u00a0 (Some things never change, do they?)\u00a0 So I asked the next question: If the State is paying for your health care, won\u2019t the State demand a say in behaviors that it considers hazardous to your health?\u00a0 Like, oh, say, banning saturated fats?<\/p>\n So, with tongue planted firmly in cheek, I wrote this little cautionary tale about a day when foods with saturated fats \u2013 such as butter and eggs \u2013 would be banned by the government.\u00a0 I mean, I saw how it\u00a0could<\/em>\u00a0happen, but never for a moment did I believe it\u00a0would<\/em>\u00a0happen.\u00a0 Not in a free country like our good old U.S. of A.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n George Scithers bought the story and published it in the May-June 1978 issue of Asimov\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>SF magazine.\u00a0 (Remember that date.) Over the years it\u2019s been reprinted in various anthologies and adapted twice into short films.<\/a><\/p>\n It even made it to TV \u2013 sort of.\u00a0 In 2009, readers contacted me saying “Lipidleggin'” had been ripped off by American Dad<\/em>.\u00a0 The show had aired an episode called “Live and Let Fry”<\/a> in which the town has banned trans fats.\u00a0 The eponymous Dad goes to bootleggers for what he calls, “food that tastes good.”\u00a0 That sounded awfully familiar, but I take the position that the writer had simply asked the next question \u2013 the same question I\u2019d asked 30 years earlier.<\/p>\n And then, on June 18, 2018, exactly 40 years after \u201cLipidleggin\u2019\u201d was published \u2013 I\u2019m talking 40 years to the month\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 the FDA issued a decree banning trans fats from the nation\u2019s food supply.<\/p>\n My satirical fiction had become a documentary.
