Looking for libertarian fiction to read over the holidays?<\/p>\n

Fiction that dramatizes the value of freedom and\/or exposes the tragic horrors and injustices of tyranny, slavery and other forms of extreme statism isn\u2019t published every day, but there\u2019s more of it than many liberty lovers may know about.<\/p>\n

Of course, the Prometheus Awards constitute such a list, with a focus on science fiction and fantasy. That\u2019s always a good place to start looking, because the awards have racked up an impressive track record of Best Novel winners since 1979 and of Best Classic Fiction works inducted into the Prometheus Hall of Fame since 1983.<\/p>\n

But in addition to that, other recommended-reading lists exist \u2013 including a just-updated and expanded article at www.artforliberty.com<\/a>\u00a0that mades interesting rationales for listing \u201cThe 26 Best Free Libertarian Novels.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This annotated list, by \u201cADuckNamedJoe\u201d (a pen name for writer J.B. Medved) focuses on fiction available free – and often online,, available for downloading without charge. \u00a0(The list was just updated Dec. 14, 2020 to include three new novels.)<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s face it,\u00a0novels celebrating the free market<\/a>\u00a0and individual rights are pretty hard to come by. Most everything in the fiction section of your local bookstore is some paean to collectivism, or diatribe against the evils of capitalism and the \u201csoul killing\u201d nature of consumerism. But you don\u2019t believe that stuff,\u201d Medved writes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know capitalism, mixed with a political system that protects individual rights, has been the single greatest force for good on the planet, lifting billions out of crushing poverty. You don\u2019t want to read all that bilge about how you\u2019re a bad, bad person for supporting it.<\/p>\n

So what is a wayward libertarian to do? Especially when so much of your money is stolen by the government each year that you have very little left over to buy books?\u201d<\/p>\n

The scope of the list is broad and encompasses all fiction, not just sf\/fantasy.
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Among the works recommended: A Lodging of Wayfaring Men<\/em>, a \u201chacker-cum-anarchocapitalist\u201d novel by Paul A. Rosenberg;\u00a0Freehold<\/em>, a 2004 novel by Michael Z. Williamson and described as \u201cone of the most explicitly libertarian sci-fi books to be published by a traditional publisher (Baen) since Robert Heinlein\u2019s\u00a0The Moon is a Harsh Mistress;\u00a0<\/em>and A Second Opinion, <\/em>Medved\u2019s novella about a doctor in a near-future America where the health-care system has fallen entirely under government control.<\/p>\n

Among the other works listed: Freedom Engineering<\/em>, by Bob Woods; On the Steppes of Central Asia,\u00a0<\/em>by \u201cMatt Stone\u201d (Richard D. Fuerle); The Driver, <\/em>by Garet Garrett; A Most Sacred Right, The Place to Stand\u00a0<\/em>and The Secret American Revolution<\/em>, by Robert Lukens; and\u00a0Minerva,\u00a0<\/em>by Bob Murphy.<\/p>\n

Yet, for all the reasons explored in the 2020 Quillette<\/em> article on \u201cThe Libertarian History of Science Fiction,\u201d<\/a> sf is prominent on the list, which naturally overlaps to some extent with our own website lists<\/a> of past Prometheus Award winners, and of Prometheus finalists and nominees<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Among the Prometheus winners recommended:
\n* Cory Doctorow\u2019s Little Brother\u00a0<\/em>and Homeland<\/em>, which respectively won the Best Novel awards for 2009 and 2014 and which are set in the same near-future world with overlapping characters. (Check out our Appreciations here<\/em><\/a> and here<\/em><\/a>.)
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

* J. Neil Schulman\u2019s Alongside Night,\u00a0<\/em>the 1989 inductee into the Prometheus Hall of Fame. (Check out our Appreciation here<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n

* Ayn Rand\u2019s Anthem<\/em>, a poetic and concise dystopian novel inducted in 1987 into the Prometheus Hall of Fame. \u00a0(Check out our Appreciation here.<\/em><\/a>)<\/p>\n

* Eric Frank Russell\u2019s novella And Then There Were None,\u00a0<\/em>which Russell later expanded into the classic sf novel The Great Explosion<\/em>, inducted in 1985 into the Prometheus Hall of Fame. (Check out our Appreciation here<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

* We,\u00a0<\/em>by Yevgeny Zamyatin, the pioneering first major dystopian novel of the 20th\u00a0<\/sup>century and inspired by the dictatorial horrors of the Soviet Union, was inducted in 1985 into the Prometheus Hall of Fame. (Check out our Appreciation here<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Also on the list is a work nominated in 2020 for the Prometheus Hall of Fame award, although it didn\u2019t make the judging committee\u2019s cut to become a finalist: Time Will Run Back, <\/em><\/a>by noted free-market economist and journalist Henry Hazlitt (who wrote the bestselling free-market primer, Economics in One Lesson.<\/a>)
\n<\/em>
\nBy the way, it\u2019s nice to see the article acknowledges the Prometheus award. For instance, Carl Bussjaeger\u2019s Net Assets\u00a0<\/em>is identified as a 2003 Prometheus Award nominee. That novel, along with Bussjaeger\u2019s Bargaining Position, <\/em>seem to be among the works most recently added to the list.<\/p>\n

Finally, here are brief descriptions of a few of the lesser-known or more recently published novels that you might not have heard about before:<\/p>\n

* #agora: a novel?,\u00a0<\/em>by Anonymous, is described as a novel of cryptoanarchy, bitcoin, temporary autonomous zones, \u201cnotels\u2019 and underground markets in silver and gold that carry on \u201cthe fine tradition of J. Neil Schulman\u2019s Alongside Night…\u00a0<\/em>in portraying how the practice of black market counter-economics (\u201cagorism\u201d) can weaken the state and carve out bubbles of freedom for its practitioners.\u201d<\/p>\n

* Withur We,\u00a0<\/em>Matthew Alexander\u2019s debut novel, described as a \u201csci-fi romp\u201d through the colonized worlds of human space that explores the nature of government and the ambiguous value of idealism.<\/p>\n
