{"id":258,"date":"2017-07-17T21:32:07","date_gmt":"2017-07-18T02:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lfs.org\/blog\/?p=258"},"modified":"2019-08-17T21:37:45","modified_gmt":"2019-08-18T02:37:45","slug":"lfs-special-award-for-freefall-a-webcomic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/lfs-special-award-for-freefall-a-webcomic\/","title":{"rendered":"LFS  Special Award for Freefall, a webcomic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The membership of the Libertarian Futurist Society has selected the first chapter of <em>Freefall<\/em>, a Webcomic by Mark Stanley, to receive a Special Prometheus Award in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><em>Freefall<\/em> is set on a planet in another solar system, Jean, colonized by a small number of human beings and a large number of robots. Its main characters are a squidlike intelligent alien, Sam Starfall; a robot, Helix; and a genetically enhanced humanoid wolf, Florence Ambrose. The strip is largely humorous, but a major storyline has explored the rights and legal status of created beings.<\/p>\n<p>The first installment appeared on March 30, 1998. Installment 2835, on July 11, 2016, announced the completion of the first chapter, making it eligible for nomination as a completed work.\u00a0(An index of all episodes can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/freefall.purrsia.com\/fcdex.htm\">http:\/\/freefall.purrsia.com\/fcdex.htm<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the annual Prometheus Awards for Best Novel and Hall of Fame (Best Classic Fiction), the Libertarian Futurist Society gives a Special Award when an outstanding work with pro-freedom themes appears in a different form or medium.<\/p>\n<p><em>Freefall<\/em>, chapter one, is the first Webcomic to be honored, and the third graphic narrative work (following <span class=\"othertitle\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/BOGUS\/ref=nosim?tag=liberfutursoc-20\">The Probability Broach<\/a><\/span> in 2005 and <span class=\"othertitle\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/BOGUS\/ref=nosim?tag=liberfutursoc-20\">Alex + Ada<\/a><\/span> in 2016).<\/p>\n<p>Mark Stanley will receive a plaque commemorating the award, and bearing a gold coin, a symbol of free minds and free markets.<\/p>\n<p>Questions may be addressed to William H.
