Moreover, in this past year\u2019s highly competitive process, Pierce\u2019s novel beat out four other widely admired and first-rate novels ranked as finalists, each written by a well-respected previous Best Novel winner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still having some trouble wrapping my brain around this. I\u2019ve read in many places over the years that the conventional wisdom is thus: a writer\u2019s first novel is mediocre at best, and even that\u2019s considered unlikely. Kenton Pierce (Courtesy of Raconteur Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pierce\u2019s modesty earns respect, reinforced by his obvious gratitude and extensive praise for the many people who helped guide him on his journey to become a science fiction writer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m no genius, creative or otherwise\u2026. I\u2019ll cop to a journeyman\u2019s skill at the craft of writing. Tops. I know damn well I\u2019m no master craftsman. I\u2019ve simply had the good fortune to fall in among a great team. Gallagher at LibertyCon 38 (Photo courtesy of Gallagher)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>ADVICE TO FELLOW WRITERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>What makes Pierce\u2019s column especially worth reading, though, is his unsolicited advice to fellow writers &#8211; especially those early in their careers as novelists.<\/p>\n<p>First, though, and characteristically, Pierce prefaces his advice with a caveat that reflects his modesty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not Expert Writing Advice, because I\u2019ve a long way to go before I achieve something resembling Mastery. I\u2019m confused\u201d or \u201cWait, when did this guy get there? I thought he was off fighting the swarming sociopathic snogfobblers in the other town?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr just \u2018Dude, this part just kind of drags on. Might want to tighten it up.
