A visit to a local bookstore brought home to me something that too many lovers of liberty tend to forget, take for granted or deny: Support for freedom, and an almost instinctive distrust of coercive and abusive authority, is deeply rooted within American society and history.<\/p>\n

Such attitudes – while certainly not the same thing as consistent support for individual rights, non-aggression, free minds and free markets – show up nearly everywhere, including within many precincts of popular and commercial culture.<\/p>\n

I was reminded of this truth anew the other day, when my husband and I visited The Book Loft, a famous and highly unusual bookstore in Columbus, for the first time in several years.<\/p>\n

COLUMBUS\u2019 RENOWNED BOOK LOFT
\n<\/b>
\nCalled \u201ca national treasure\u201d by The New York Times and described by the Columbus Business First newspaper as \u201ciconic\u201d and a \u201ctourist destination,\u2019 The Book Loft is often viewed as a \u201cliterary labyrinth\u201d due to its maze-like 32 rooms connected by narrow passageways and staircases in red-brick buildings dating to before the Civil War.<\/p>\n

With at least 500,000 books in stock and close to a million volumes available during the Christmas holiday season, The Book Loft is one of the largest independent bookstores with 7,500 square feet of space in a renovated old two-story house at 631 South Third Street in the red-brick-lined German Village neighborhood just south of Downtown Columbus.<\/p>\n

Different rooms specialize in different subjects, and there are books for virtually very taste. So it wouldn\u2019t have been surprising for me to find, if I searched long enough, at least some of the more than 100 books or stories that have won a Prometheus Award since 1979.<\/p>\n

But I was both surprised and delighted to find several Prometheus winners grouped together and featured prominently on a shelf in the main entrance room – the one that every visitor must enter first after following a long garden path lined with park benches and a patio with several tables of bargain books.<\/p>\n

A FRONT SHELF OF DYSTOPIAN CLASSICS
\n<\/b>
\nProminently displayed immediately underneath a bookshelf labeled \u201cBanned and Challenged Books\u201d are several classic dystopian novels that rank among the best-known and most enduring books to be inducted into the Prometheus Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I immediately spotted the 60th anniversary edition of Ray Bradbury\u2019s Fahrenheit 451<\/a>,<\/i> inducted into our Hall of Fame in 1984. (Seeing it brought back fond memories of introducing Bradbury when he accepted his award before a huge hall of more than 500 fans at the Friday opening ceremonies of the 1984 Worldcon in Los Angeles – one of the best-attended Prometheus Awards ceremonies in our 47-year history.)<\/p>\n

It took me another moment to spot an SF Masterworks edition of George Orwell\u2019s Nineteen Eighty-Four, <\/i><\/a>aptly inducted in 1984 into the Prometheus Hall of Fame. That thin single copy of Orwell\u2019s masterpiece was wedged right next to Bradbury\u2019s classic work, and easy to miss.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>On the same shelf was Ursula K. Le Guin\u2019s The Dispossessed,<\/i><\/a> one of the most controversial works to receive a Prometheus Award when it was inducted after years of debate in 1993 into our Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

And just below that shelf is Anthony Burgess\u2019 A Clockwork Orange<\/i><\/a>, the 1998 Prometheus Hall of Fame winner.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Next to Burgess\u2019 novel is Margaret Atwood\u2019s The Handmaid\u2019s Tale,<\/i> a 1987 Prometheus Best Novel finalist. (I was surprised that the bookstore didn\u2019t put next to it Atwood\u2019s bestselling sequel The Testaments<\/i>, a 2020 Prometheus Best Novel finalist.)<\/p>\n

And finally, prominently displayed with multiple copies on the same shelf as The Dispossessed, Fahrenheit 451 <\/i>and Nineteen Eighty-Four <\/i>are multiple copies of Aldous Huxley\u2019s Brave New World<\/i> – the latest work to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, having just been voted the winner of this year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n

TRUE CLASSICS – AND PERENNIAL BESTSELLERS
\n<\/b>
\nWhy does The Book Loft feature these anti-authoritarian and libertarian classics so prominently? And why are multiple copies of almost all of these well-known titles stacked up and available to buyers?<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t have to ask the bookstore staff for the answers, because it\u2019s obvious: These acclaimed bestsellers continue to sell – and sell well – even decades after their initial publication.<\/p>\n

\nOne might also wonder why they didn’t include other Prometheus winners on the same shelf, from Orwell’s Animal Farm<\/em><\/a> to Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother<\/em> and Ira Levin’s underestimated This Perfect Day. <\/em>But of course booksellers have the right to choose what books they offer for sale – and decide which ones they have room for. For all I know, these and other Prometheus winners are available elsewhere in this store’s labyrinthine maze of rooms and shelves – and I hope to return to explore further.<\/p>\n

Of the titles that The Book Loft does feature prominently, each book deserves its rightful place on their shelves because each has acquired the patina of a true classic. These are works that every educated person likely has read (or plans to read) and that nearly every American is familiar with.<\/p>\n

TOUCHSTONES OF OUR CULTURE
\n<\/b>
\nLong ago, these Prometheus-winning classics by Bradbury, Huxley, Le Guin and Orwell have entered our common culture. They\u2019ve become touchstones of our values, emblems of our identity and masterworks offering cautionary tales about enduring threats to liberty.<\/p>\n

So if any LFS member may feel sometimes that they\u2019re in a misunderstood minority and that our favorite books are relegated to a ghetto, that\u2019s not so. Some of the works that libertarians love are also admired and read by millions of others in America, Europe, South America, Australia and around the world.<\/p>\n

Yes, I wish more people did. I wish each of these classics – and others that have won a Prometheus Award – were read even more widely.<\/p>\n

IF ONLY MORE PEOPLE OPPOSED TYRANNY
\n<\/b>
\nAnd of course, I wish everyone would be more consistent in their support for individual liberty and their opposition to tyranny, even when authoritarian trends are masked by good intentions or justified \u201cfor reasons of state\u201d or \u201cfor the greater good.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the fact remains that libertarian values and ideas, whether manifesting as classical liberal or limited-government conservative, have become embedded in many ways in both our popular and elite culture.<\/p>\n

For all its imperfections, America on its 250th anniversary continues to embrace and uphold many values and ideals in our arts and entertainment that can legitimately be considered part of what can be called a lively culture of liberty.<\/p>\n

For me, this bookstore discovery reaffirms my belief that the desire for freedom lies deep within nearly every human heart, even if it sometimes wars with our \\ impulses to control and command or to defend various illiberal ideologies.<\/p>\n

This may be a darker era for the libertarian movement in some ways. And at our most pessimistic, libertarians and other freedom lovers justifiably can worry about various contemporary authoritarian trends at home and abroad.<\/p>\n

Yet, more often than you might assume, you can discover palpable signs of our libertarian and anti-authoritarian values in many unexpected places – including the front room of a local bookstore.<\/p>\n
