by The Orwell Foundation in the United Kingdom, the prizes aim to recognize work that comes closest to George Orwell\u2019s ambition \u201cto make political writing into art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orwell certainly achieved that goal with his most widely acclaimed and enduring novels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/big-brother-truth-doublethink-thoughtcrime-newspeak-memory-holes-socialism-liberalism-liberty-and-tyranny-an-appreciation-of-george-orwells-nineteen-eighty-four-a-1984-prometheus-ha\/\"><i>Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/i> <\/a>and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/an-allegorical-fable-about-the-beastly-consequences-of-communism-and-coercive-egalitarianism-george-orwells-animal-farm-the-2011-prometheus-hall-of-fame-co-winner-for-best-classic-fiction\/\">Animal Farm<\/a>,<\/i> both later inducted into the Prometheus Hall of Fame for Best Classic Fiction. Given the dystopian focus of <i>Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/i> and the animal fable and satirical parable of <i>Animal Farm, <\/i>one might expect the Orwell Prize\u2019s fiction category to highlight the fantastical genres.<\/p>\n<p>Yet most Orwell Prize finalists and winners have not been science fiction, fantasy or even dystopian. As Mike Glyer\u2019s <i>File 770 <\/i>noted in a news item about this year\u2019s finalists, only one of the eight 2026 Political Fiction Book Prize finalists is science fiction: <i>The Comfort of Distant Stars,<\/i> by I.O. in our case, on both liberty and literary quality.<\/p>\n<p>The Political Fiction Book Prize has only been presented since 2019. So far, perhaps partly because that category is still relatively new, none of the winners appear to fall within the fantastical genres.<\/p>\n<p><a novel is the 2020 winner: <i>The Nickel Boys,<\/i> Colson Whitehead\u2019s historical drama depicting corruption and racial brutality that affect two African-American boys sent to an abusive reform school in 1960s Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Named one of the top 10 films of 2024 by the American Film Institute, the Amazon MGM Studios film version of the novel was notated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Winners of the 2026 Orwell Prizes will be announced June 25 at an awards ceremony at the Bloomsbury Theatre, University College London.<\/p>\n<p>For more
