at least in part &#8211; with James Blish.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Blish\u2019s <i>The Star Dwellers.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>When I read Blish\u2019s 1961 novel as a pre-teen in the early 1960s, I came to understand for the first time key insights about voluntary consent and mutual exchange for profit as the best foundation for peace and progress.<\/p>\n<p>Now a finalist for the next Prometheus Hall of Fame award for Best Classic Fiction, <i>The Star Dwellers <\/i>is a young-adult-oriented science fiction novel that revolves around a fraught \u201csecond contact\u201d between star-faring humans and an ancient, advanced alien species.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>AN INTRODUCTION TO FREEDOM &#8211; Blish shows how mutual understanding is forged against the odds between a young human and one of the younger aliens, leading to a formal Earth treaty that ensures peace between the two species rather than more violence and war.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, via an enjoyable tale geared to my age and comprehension level, I came to appreciate how cooperation (which must be voluntary to be considered cooperation at all) is both morally and practically superior to coercion &#8211; including the institutionalized coercion of the State, which by no accident is the human institution based on a legitimized use of force and that frequently makes war, a more extreme and deadly form of coercion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Star-Dwellers-James-Blish.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"10034\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/review-james-blishs-the-star-dwellers-dramatizes-core-concepts-of-consent-contract-and-deal-making-that-make-peace-and-freedom-possible\/the-star-dwellers-james-blish\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Star-Dwellers-James-Blish.jpg?fit=263%2C396&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"263,396\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"The Star Dwellers James Blish\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;The Star Dwellers James Blish&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Star-Dwellers-James-Blish.jpg?fit=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Star-Dwellers-James-Blish.jpg?fit=263%2C396&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10034 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Star-Dwellers-James-Blish.jpg?resize=199%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Star-Dwellers-James-Blish.jpg?resize=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1 199w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lfs.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Star-Dwellers-James-Blish.jpg?w=263&amp;ssl=1 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>MY \u201cAHA!\u201d MOMENT ABOUT THE ETHICS OF EXCHANGE<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\nI still remember the exciting \u201caha\u201d moments of discovery I experienced when reading <i>The Star Dwellers. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>For it introduced me, in an entertaining and simplified way appropriate to my age, to a concept that\u2019s basic to economics but also to ethics: Dealing with others peacefully and respectfully, through voluntary agreement and mutual consent, is the essence of civility and civilization itself.<\/p>\n<p>While geared to a young and young-adult readership, as so many science fiction novels of the 1950s and 1960s were by my other childhood favorite authors such as Heinlein and Andre Notion, <i>The Star Dwellers<\/i> clearly dramatizes an insight known to economists for generations: When two individuals, or two groups voluntarily forge a contract or treaty or exchange goods, it\u2019s to their mutual benefit from each of their perspectives.<\/p>\n<p><b>MAKING A DEAL: THE KEY PASSAGE IN BLISH\u2019S NOVEL<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\nThe key passage in the novel occurs when Jack Loftus, a young human space cadet, befriends Hesperus, one of the youngest alien \u201cAngels,\u201d and they begin to communicate and negotiate to find a path to peace &#8211; and avert the \u201cdeath of earth and mankind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A happy result is that they learn the benefits of \u201cthe essence of making a deal,\u201d which the much older and wiser alien species interprets as a reflection of the young human species evolving enough to develop \u201ca sense of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJack, what is the nature of this concept?\u201d an elder Angel asks to clarify their understanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a kind of agreement in which each party gives something to the other,\u201d Jack said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe regard it as fair only when each party feels that what he has received is as valuable, or more valuable, than what he has given\u2026 Between individuals, this process is called bargaining. When it is done between races or nations, it is called making a treaty.
